DSC00613I am an award-winning writer based in the San Francisco Bay Area. At the right are links to a selection of articles for leading magazines, websites and newspapers.

As a journalist, I’ve chosen to range over a wide territory, not cover a single beat. My pieces run, in subject matter, from arts to business to history, from travel to tech, from food to books to the law — the last, because I’m a former lawyer. (I practiced as a barrister, a civil litigator, in my native Canada.)

Switching from the law into journalism was a return of sorts. Before going to law school, I’d edited my high school paper, and I’d worked, during undergrad at Dartmouth, for the college daily. But I had no professional experience in the field when I left the practice. I have since worked as an editor at Saturday Night magazine, a columnist and editor at Toronto Life and a producer at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.

SELECTED OUTLETS (in A-to-Z order)Azure, Canadian Business, Dartmouth Alumni Magazine, en Route, Fashion, the Globe & Mail, the Los Angeles Times, National Post, Private Clubs, Reader’s Digest, Report on Business, San Francisco magazine, the San Francisco Chronicle and its magazine, Smithsonian magazine, Sunset magazine, Toronto Life magazine, the Toronto Star, University of Toronto Magazine, The Walrus, Western Living and Wine Enthusiast.

TEACHING: I recently taught two classes at Stanford, one on travel writing, the other on usage, style and grammar in the Internet age. I’ve co-authored (with C.H.H. McNairn) two textbooks on privacy law, that have been used in classes on the subject.

FAVOURITE QUOTES: The epigraph to E.M. Forster’s novel Howard’s End: “Only Connect.” (It’s also my Instagram handle.)

This exchange at the close of Nancy Mitford’s Pursuit of Love. “I said, ‘He was the great love of her life, you know.’

‘Oh, dulling,’ said my mother, [the Bolter], sadly. ‘One always thinks that. Every, every time.'”

And, on a more earnest note, Martin Luther: “To those who do what lies within them, God does not deny grace.”

12: National Magazine Award nominations for articles in Society, Arts & Entertainment, Columns and Business. (Three silvers, nine honorable mentions, to date.)

1:  North American Travel Journalists’ Association gold for a 2009 piece for enRoute on Germany’s car city.

1: Bay Area Travel Writers’ Best of 2016 award for a piece on San Francisco’s tough, historic Tenderloin district.

1: Eureka Award from Visit California for Best Newspaper Travel Piece re: California in 2016, also for the Tenderloin article.

3: Writing awards from university press associations. (Two golds for a story on an early aviation pioneer and a silver for one on an influential literary critic.)

6: I have served as judge for the Canadian National Magazine Awards (4 times), for the Society of American Business Editors & Writers (once), and for the Canadian Society of Magazine Editors (also once).
